Sinopsis

Las actualidades filmadas han sido definidas como una secuencia que recoge “escenas intrascendentes, que no tienen interés por [...] lo que muestran, sino por su existencia como meros registros de la realidad”. Son propias de la primera etapa del cinematógrafo, cuando se denominaban «vistas» o «temas actuales», y el mejor ejemplo lo constituyen los cortos de los hermanos Lumiére, la factoría Edison y el realizador británico Robert W. Paul.

Las actualidades filmadas nos permiten apreciar los primeros ensayos del cine desde el punto de vista temático y narrativo, tanto en el campo de la ficción como en el documental. En este caso, deben considerarse propiamente como documentales, pese a su aparente simplicidad, ya que son una "representación de la realidad"; la filmación de un determinado evento en lugar de otro implica una elección (aunque sea por motivos puramente comerciales) y, en muchas ocasiones, estos acontecimientos eran preparados o recreados para ser captados por la cámara.

"Along with his brother Auguste, film pioneer Louis Lumière thrilled audiences at the turn of the century with moving pictures that seemed to burst from the screen, and many have credited the Lumierès as the fathers of modern film. Of course, filmmaking techniques have come a long way in the 100 years since the brothers helped to birth modern cinema, but their short silent films still hold a magic that is both undeniable and beautiful, and they are enchanting in their simplicity. Now modern day film lovers can revisit 85 of the Lumières' earliest efforts in this collection narrated by Bertrand Tavernier and presented in association with The Institut Lumière.

Eighty-five of the silent 50-second "actualities" made by the Lumieres between 1895 and 1897 have been mastered from original 35mm material and are presented here in this first ever authorized video presentation. An amazing journey through the birth of the motion picture. Narrated by film director and President of the Institut Lumiere Bertrand Tavernier (Coup de Torchon), with a piano score by Stuart Oderman."
